Personal Finance

Fundamentals of Finance by Adam J. McKee

Section 1:  Introduction to Finance

This book may well be the most important book that you’ll ever read.  I don’t mean that it is a great book packed full of unique insight and wisdom.  I mean that it may cause you to realize that you need a plan for your financial future and you need one now.  One of the biggest mistakes you can ever make is to think of retirement as something impossibly far into the future that you’ll worry about at some future date.  When you are a helping professional, the only way your golden years will be indeed golden is through the magic of compounding interest.  Before you can benefit from that magic, you have to save money.  To do that, you need to know how to spend wisely and avoid bad decisions.  We’ll cover all of that and then some.

Note that this little book only scratches the surface of a broad, deep, and incredibly important subject.

At the risk of sounding gimmicky, a major goal of this book is to provide you with the tools that you need to become wealthy.  The books and websites available to help you “get rich quick” are legion.  Most have a secret system that you can only learn by joining an online community or buying a particular book.  None of these systems will work with any acceptable probability of success.  The “secrets” in this book are not secrets; they are financial best practices that have withstood the test of time and been proven by America’s debt-free millionaires.  Implementing these practices is hard.  To become wealthy, you will have to learn a lot, and master self-discipline.
