Probability sampling techniques are the most desirable because they rely on chance to determine the selection of participants in a study.  If a sample is chosen by random rules (i.e., it is not systematic), it is highly likely that the sample will be representative of the population.  Therefore, researchers should use probability sampling methods whenever possible.

A probability sampling method is any sampling method that utilizes randomization for selecting participants.
