Americans Don’t Save

While 66% of Americans say they or their spouse have saved for retirement, most people have accumulated only very small balances.  More than half of the survey respondents report less than $25,000 in savings and investments (excluding the value of their primary home and defined-benefit plans), and 28% say they have less than $1,000 saved.  While estimation methods vary widely from expert to expert, most of us aren’t coming anywhere close to the 10 to 20 times our annual salary range recommended.
